The Printer I Want to Print to isn't in "The List"

A very common issue with users in the Active Directory network is that they cannot print, or the printer they want to print to is not in the list of printers. The reason why this happens is because your "Connected" printers do not follow you with your Roaming Profile. When you are logged into your machine in your office, your printer is connected there because that machine keeps a local copy of your network profile, and adds some information to that is specific to that machine (i.e. what printers you want to print to from your office).

So when you go to a lab and want to print there... What do you do?

You have to Add the printer! This article describes, step-by-step, how to add a printer if the printer is not on the list.

Step 1:
Press "Start", Then choose "Printer and Faxes."

Alternatively, go to Control Panel, Then double-click on the icon labeled "Printers and Faxes."
Depending on your preferences, this may require several clicks, but the screen you want to see looks similar to this:


Step 2:
Click "Add a Printer" from the menu on the left.


Press Next


Step 3:
Choose "A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer." Then Press "Next."


Step 4:
Choose "Connect to this printer(or to browse for a printer, select this option and click Next)." Then Press "Next."


Step 5:
Wait a few moments for the list to populate, then Look for "SCCC"

Under SCCC, there is a computer called "MFS" (for Main File Server). Double-Click on the name "MFS". A List of printers, along with a brief description of each, is shown.



Step 6:
Scroll down to the printer that matches the description of the printer you wish to print to, select it, and press next.

The Add Printer Wizard will then ask you if you wish to use this printer as the default printer. If that is what you desire, choose yes. Otherwise, choose no. Press next, then press finish, and now you are done! You can print to the printer you just selected.

Warning


If during step 6, you are told "Access Denied" when trying to connect to the printer, Please send an e-mail to it@sccc.edu letting them know that you need to print to that printer.
